Based in Birmingham, Maypole FC has been coaching young people since 1975. We’re experts in youth football, and this is shown in how we’ve developed as a club since our formation. Our team is passionate about the excellent work that we do, and we can’t wait for your young person to join one of our teams.
Initially Maypole was run from the Maypole Youth Centre, Idminston Croft, where we were able to start providing association football for boys of all ages. We joined the Central Warwickshire League initially with just 3 teams with our home games played at Silver Street in Wythall whilst training took place at Daisy Farm Park. Like today, our funding came mainly from player subscriptions, grants, and fundraising events.
In 1978 we formed an open age team with the players that had came through from the previous 3 years. The team over the years proved very successful progressing from Division 7 to the Premier league.
In 1980, to create a standard 'kit uniform' we introduced a red & black striped shirt, black shorts, and either black or red socks, this style of kit is still worn today. In 1987, after a tremendous amount of hard work with fundraising and obtaining small grants, we managed to raise enough money to purchase our clubhouse and negotiate the lease of the old Rover ground from Greenaleigh Road where we still play to this day.
Due to the continuing hard work and success of the teams, in 1988 we formed Maypole United. This allowed us to have 2 teams eligible to play in the same age group, since then we have ran both names and also Maypole Lions under Maypole FC.
Throughout Maypole’s history there have been a great number of people who have contributed towards the clubs continued success, especially the following:
• Ben Onions
• Bob Devey
• George McGahey
• Jim Penn
• Stan Baldwin
• John Lockley
There had also been a truly outstanding contribution from Hazel & Mick McGahey who were dedicated to the club from the very beginning and without their immense time and effort, Maypole FC would not be where it is today.
In February 2009 Sir Trevor David Brooking, CBE a former England international footballer and manager awarded Maypole FC their prestigious Charter Standard Community Club Award. This is an exclusive group of leading community football clubs working in partnership with Nike and The FA to raise standards in grassroots football.
As it stands Maypole FC has more than 40 years of football experience, and we have two or three teams in most age groups, ranging from u7s all the way to u16s. We play every week in the Central Warwickshire Youth Football League (CWYFL) and have even branched out recently and set up a new team to the play in the Midland Junior Premier League FA Charter Standard League (MJPL).
